Lori and Brantley's Wedding: St. Simons Island, GA
Thursday, June 05, 2008 | Weddings

SEE THE WEBSHOW: LORI AND BRANTLEY'S SLIDESHOW
VIEW ALL PRINTS OR MAKE PURCHASES: PICTAGE LAB

Brian and I went to St. Simons for Lori and Brantley's wedding.  I love St. Simons because I lived there when I was in high school.  Brian and I love Lori and Brantley and their friends and family.  Lori and her mom immediately won Brian over, and he was quite impressed with Mrs. Dixon's vast knowlege and collection of all things related to dirt digging.  (That is my terminology - not their's I must add!)  lol

For those of you that think I dropped off the face of the Earth - I did - sort of.  I have been without internet ALL week.  After throwing a hissy fit (for all you southerners out there), my internet company finally squeezed in a repair date for me.

I would love to tell you all of the great things about Lori and Brantley - but I am in a serious time crunch trying to catch up before heading out of town this weekend for work.  A lengthy post would mean postponing it until next week, and I know they would rather see the images now!  So here we go...

We started the day early down in the village where Lori and Brantley were married.  These two are the most fun, laid back, down to earth people.  They chose to have their casual ceremony at the casino (which is not a casino at all).  It does have an incredible view of the water and the pier.

Lori's mom helped her into her dress...

Lori is always smiling - isn't she beautiful?

She gets her great smile and good looks from this rock hound...

Lori and Brantley decided to see each other before the ceremony so we had Brantley wait for Lori down on the walkway overlooking the water.

After the photos - it was almost time for the ceremony to begin.  Lori's bridesmaids were pretty and fun.

Her bouquet was simple - but beautifully southern!

This is what the casino looks like...

The ceremony...

Lots of hugging going on!

I love this shot from the cake cutting...

Lori's colors (blue and green) were so pretty.

The rings...

I'll leave you with a few images of Lori and Brantley...

Have a great weekend everyone!

TWENTY YEARS???  That can't be correct!
Monday, June 02, 2008 | Random

Twenty (OMG!) years ago I was living on St. Simons Island and graduated from Glynn Academy.

I don’t remember much about graduation.  Yeah…I know what you are thinking, but the reason I don’t remember much is because it was so long  ago.  I do remember sitting in the hot auditorium every day the week before graduation practicing our alma mater:

'Mong the lordly oaks of Brunswick, Glorious to our view,
Stands our own beloved high school, Basking 'neah the blue.

Glynn Academy we will honor, May we never fail,
For thy fame shall never perish, Red and white all hail.

How I remember that I will never know!

I was 17 and getting ready to head to Georgia Southern University (Go Eagles!) as a marketing major.  I had big plans to live in Germany because I had been on a high school trip to Europe and had fallen in love with the country.

After five years at GSU (and switching majors several times) I ended up teaching 2nd grade in Quitman, Georgia. While teaching there, I ran into a familiar face from that high school trip to Europe.  Beth and I were two years apart and didn’t really know each other on the trip, but it was fun to see each other years later in a different place.  Beth invited Brian and me to join a supper club she and her husband Cliff were in and we became good friends.

Exactly 20 years after my high school graduation, I found myself back on St. Simons Island last weekend photographing a wedding.  Isn’t it funny how things turn out?  On our way home Sunday, I couldn’t resist driving by Glynn Academy and getting a few shots.

Brian got one of me in front of the bell.  Be sure to notice the year 1788 on the bell.  The school was 200 years old the year I graduated.

I don't look a day over 21 do I???  ha
I can’t believe it’s been TWENTY years since graduation.  Crazy.

So twenty years after high school – the person from high school that I hang out with the most is my friend Beth.  And we didn’t even know each other back then.  Isn’t it weird how things turn out?  I’m lucky to still be friends with lots of people from school, but most of them are from the school that I went to from first grade through the middle of tenth grade: Westbrook.

I’m rambling this morning so I’ll continue with a little timeline of my life and where I’ve been!  :D ha

1970-1971:  Homerville, GA: Yep.  I was born there.
1971-1985:  Quitman & Barwick, GA: Lived in those towns from the time I was a baby until I was in tenth grade.  I went to a tiny school (Westbrook) in Dixie, GA.
1985-1988:  St. Simons Island, GA: Graduated from Glynn Academy.
1988-1993:  Statesboro, GA: Graduated from Georgia Southern University
1993-1996:  Quitman, GA: Back to Quitman.  I taught elementary school and graduated with a masters degree from Valdosta State.
1996-1999:  Anchorage, AK: I married my fabulous husband, and we moved to Eagle River – I worked several jobs there: Sales Associate at Sadlers Home Furnishings, Sales Associate at The Alaska Club, and taught school at Aurora Elementary.
1999-2003:  Quitman, GA: I taught school at Quitman Elementary again.
2003-2007:  Charleston, SC: I taught school for one year (and earned my spot in heaven) at a school in downtown Charleston.  Then I started (and then sold) a decorative concrete company.  And last but not least, I took courses at the Center for Photography and became a photographer!
2007-NOW:  Valdosta, GA: I’m still loving being a photographer!

Now that I have bored you with my timeline – you can tell me if we have any connections.  Brian says that we can go anywhere in the world and I see someone I know or have a connection with them in some way.
So…if we have any connections, let me know.  If not, give a shout out to your high school!

Hi Linda - oh wow - good to hear from you!  Abby - that definitely counts - especially if you take me with you! (06/06/08, 04:38)

Jessica: Hi Jill, just wanted to let you know we have a connection.  I, too, went to Westbrook.  I know your brother, Sam.  I took Spanish with him.  I think you also know a friend of mine named Lori.  Anyway, your pictures are beautiful! (06/04/08, 12:12)
Allison Richardson: Hi Jill. This is my first time commenting on your blog also, and I couldn´t resist as we have a few connections. First off, I had spoken with Leigh Webber about two months ago and she is the one who mentioned that we were living parallel lives, so I checked out your blog as a result of that conversation. Here are a few connections: I see that you shoot in Savannah, where I am originally from. My family is from Valdosta and I graduated from VSU in 2005, although I started in 1995. Met my husband while he was in pilot training and moved to MS and came back to Valdosta). We are now in Charleston where I am trying to start my own photography business and will be taking a course at Alterman Studios in July/Aug. Last, but not least, when I saw the photo that you took at the top of Xunantunich, kind of a triangle framed shot with stairs through the middle...(did you delete that post?) I have that same exact shot that I took when I was there in 1991 on a mission trip! Sorry for such a long comment! By the way, I love your work. You have such a good eye and it looks like you really make your clients feel at ease. (06/03/08, 05:51)
Lindsi: Looks like a cool place.  I love SSI. (06/03/08, 05:50)
wicked winch: How about I was on St. Simons´s Island the very weekend your graduated!!!!  I was unable to make the actual graduation ceremony as I didn´t make the cut (being an outlaw and everything).   Anyway it was beautiful on St. Simons and my son gained a cute new pet by the name of Emaline. You don´t look a day over 20-something.    Must be that disgusting clean living. (06/03/08, 05:50)
Kim: This is the first time ever commenting on your site.  I look at it every day.  Anyway, reading your timeline this morning I wanted you to know that my mother was born in Homerville, GA.  Long time ago....ha.  She was 30 when you were born.  When she was 14 or 15 her family moved to Chipley, FL where she lives today.   (06/02/08, 07:51)
